Incheon International Airport is about an hour from central Seoul, and after a long flight the question is always the same: train, bus or taxi? I am Jin, I live in Korea, and this guide compares the AREX airport train (Express and All-Stop), the airport limousine bus and taxis, with official fares, travel times, where to buy tickets and which option suits your neighborhood. If this is your first trip, keep my Korea trip planner for first-timers open too.

Incheon Airport to Seoul: Quick Comparison

OptionTimeAdult fare
AREX Express43–51 min₩13,000
AREX All-Stop59–66 min₩4,750–5,350
Limousine bus60–80+ minAbout ₩17,000–18,000
Taxi60–100 minMeter + tolls
  • Times are to Seoul Station for the trains (Terminal 1 is the shorter time, Terminal 2 the longer). Bus and taxi times depend on your route and traffic.
  • All-Stop fares are with a T-money or other transport card. A single-use ticket costs a little more plus a refundable deposit.
  • Bus fares are for the deluxe routes into Seoul I checked; each route sets its own fare. Prices may change.

Option 1: AREX Airport Railroad

AREX (공항철도, gonghang cheoldo) is the airport railroad from both Incheon terminals to Seoul Station, and it never gets stuck in traffic. Two kinds of trains share the line, and they are easy to mix up.

AREX Express (direct train)

The Express (직통열차, jiktong yeolcha) runs non-stop between the airport and Seoul Station: 43 minutes from Terminal 1 and 51 minutes from Terminal 2. Every passenger gets a reserved seat, there is free Wi-Fi on board, and the official adult fare is ₩13,000 (children ₩9,500). Trains run about every 20 to 40 minutes. On the current timetable, the first Seoul-bound Express leaves Terminal 2 at 05:16, and the last ones leave around 22:40 (Terminal 2) and 22:48 (Terminal 1), but check the AREX timetable before you fly.

You need an Express ticket before you board; a T-money tap does not work for the Express. Buy one at the Express Train customer center or ticket machines on B1 of the Transportation Center at either terminal (overseas Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex and UnionPay cards work), or on the AREX website or app. I usually buy mine at the counter, but you can also prebook an AREX Express voucher on Klook and turn it into a seat ticket at the station or in the app.

AREX All-Stop (regular train)

The All-Stop train (일반열차, ilban yeolcha) is the budget choice. It takes about 59 minutes from Terminal 1 and 66 minutes from Terminal 2 to Seoul Station, and it stops at useful transfer stations on the way: Gimpo Airport, Digital Media City, Hongik Univ. (Hongdae), Gongdeok and Seoul Station. With a transport card the official fare to Seoul Station is ₩4,750 from Terminal 1 and ₩5,350 from Terminal 2; to Hongik Univ. it is ₩4,650 and ₩5,250.

Just tap a T-money card at the gate. Without one, buy a single-use card from the station machine: it costs ₩100 more and has a ₩500 deposit that you get back from the refund machine at your destination. Seats are not reserved, so it can get crowded.

Landing late? All-Stop trains run later than the Express, close to midnight, but some late trains end at Digital Media City instead of Seoul Station. Check the destination on the platform screen.

Option 2: Airport Limousine Bus

Airport limousine buses (리무진 버스, rimujin beoseu) go straight to hotels and major stops all over Seoul: you sit down once, your luggage goes underneath, and you get off near your hotel. That makes them my pick for Gangnam, Jamsil and Dongdaemun. The Seoul city government says the ride takes about 60 to 80 minutes, depending on route and traffic.

Fares and routes

Each route has its own fare. On the deluxe routes I checked, the adult fare into Seoul is ₩17,000 with Airport Limousine and ₩18,000 with K Airport Limousine. Some examples from the operators’ own route lists:

  • 6001 Dongdaemun and Myeongdong; 6002 Hongdae to Cheongnyangni; 6015 Myeongdong, Euljiro and Mapo
  • 6701 City Hall and Gwanghwamun; 6702 Namsan and Dongdaemun
  • 6703 Gangnam and COEX; 6705A Jamsil and Dongseoul

Routes and stops change, so search your hotel area on the Incheon Airport Bus Search page before you fly.

Where to buy tickets

  • Terminal 1: bus ticket booths on 1F, inside the arrivals hall next to exits 4 and 9, and outside near exits 4, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 13. Self-service kiosks stand nearby.
  • Terminal 2: the bus terminal on B1 of the Transportation Center, with booths and kiosks.
  • Payment: the official Seoul guide says the booths take cash, major credit cards and T-money.

Your ticket shows the boarding stop number, and ticket holders board first. Airport Limousine says its routes 6001, 6002 and 6015 also take cash or a transport card on board at Terminal 1, but at Terminal 2 you need a ticket. Press the bell when your stop comes up. That company allows two bags per person (under 28 inches and 20 kg).

Option 3: Taxi (and Kakao T)

Official taxi stands (택시 승강장, taeksi seunggangjang) are directly outside the arrivals hall; ignore anyone inside offering a ride. The Seoul city government lists four types:

  • Regular taxi: the cheapest option.
  • Deluxe taxi: bigger, about 40 to 50% more expensive.
  • Jumbo taxi: up to 8 seats, same fare as a deluxe taxi.
  • International taxi: about 20% more, with drivers who speak English, Japanese or Chinese. Book it ahead.

Taxis use the meter, and the expressway toll is added for you to pay. Seoul’s official guide estimates roughly ₩47,000–58,500 on the meter to central areas such as Myeongdong or Samseong. Treat that as a rough guide: late-night surcharges and traffic push it up. For a current estimate, check the car route in Naver Map, which shows an expected taxi fare.

You can also call a taxi with Kakao T (App Store / Google Play). My Kakao T vs Uber guide covers sign-up, overseas cards and fares. If you would rather have a driver and a price sorted in advance, book a private transfer such as Welcome Pickups Seoul airport transfer, which offers English-speaking drivers and fixed rates.

Before You Leave Arrivals: T-money and Mobile Data

Sort out two things before you head to the train or bus:

  • T-money card: buy one at a convenience store in the airport or AREX station and top it up with cash at the station machines. It works on the All-Stop train, subways, buses and many taxis.
  • SIM or eSIM: mobile carrier counters, including KT and LG U+, are on the 1F arrivals floor, and Incheon Airport lists some as open 24 hours. If you prebooked a KT tourist SIM on Klook, you collect it at the KT counter with your voucher and passport. My eSIM vs SIM vs pocket WiFi guide helps you choose.

Which Option for Your Neighborhood?

  • Hongdae, Yeonnam, Mapo: AREX All-Stop straight to Hongik Univ. Station, no transfer. Bus 6002 also stops in Hongdae.
  • Seoul Station, Myeongdong, City Hall: AREX Express to Seoul Station, then a short subway or taxi ride. With heavy bags, buses 6001, 6015 or 6701 can drop you closer to your hotel.
  • Gangnam, COEX, Jamsil: the limousine bus wins, with no transfers on the subway with luggage (6703 for Gangnam and COEX, 6705A for Jamsil).
  • Dongdaemun: buses 6001 or 6702.
  • Continuing by KTX: take the AREX to Seoul Station, which is also the KTX station. See my KTX booking guide.
  • Families, groups or late arrivals: a taxi or prebooked transfer is simplest.

FAQ

Is the AREX Express worth it over the All-Stop train?

For Seoul Station and a guaranteed seat, yes: it is about 15 minutes faster. For Hongdae or a tight budget, the All-Stop is cheaper.

Can I use T-money on the airport limousine bus?

You usually buy a ticket at the booth or kiosk (booths accept T-money). At Terminal 1, routes 6001, 6002 and 6015 also take a transport card on board.

What if I land after the last train?

Check the All-Stop timetable first, since it runs later than the Express. After that, Incheon Airport lists late-night buses into Seoul (N6000, N6002, N6701 and N6703, about ₩17,000–18,000), and taxis wait outside arrivals.
