If you are looking for something to do in Busan that is relaxing, photogenic and does not need a full day, the Haeundae River Cruise is an easy pick. It is a roughly 50-minute boat ride on the Suyeong River and out toward Gwangan Bridge, and it is at its best at sunset or after dark. I rode it at night, and I would happily do it again. Here is what to expect, how to book, and the small things that make it more comfortable.

Which Time Should You Pick: Day, Sunset or Night?

The operator runs the same route at different times of day, and the mood changes a lot.

Sunset cruise (my pick #1)

The official site calls the sunset slot the most popular because the river and Gwangan Bridge look best as the sky changes color. It recommends choosing a departure about 30-40 minutes before sunset, and notes that cloudy days may hide the sunset. Sunset times shift with the seasons, so search for "sunset time Haeundae-gu" and pick the departure from the timetable.

Night cruise (my pick #2)

This is the one I took. The skyline of Centum City, Marine City and Haeundae lights up, the bridge glows, and the still river doubles everything in reflections. Per the official site, some night departures include a fireworks service (weekday 6 PM and Saturday 6:30 PM or later departures), and earlier ones get a polaroid photo instead. Both can change with the weather, so confirm when you book.

Day cruise

Daytime is the cheapest and quietest. The sea looks bluer, and the site says it is the most stable time for people worried about motion sickness. If you only care about price, this is the budget option, but the lights are what make this ride special for me.

What the Cruise Is Like

You board at the dock near the Suyeong River, and the boat first glides past the riverside towers of Centum City and Marine City. The water here is calm, and the city seems to hang on both banks. Then the route opens toward the sea, where Gwangan Bridge, the long, lit-up suspension bridge that is one of Busan's best-known sights, comes into view.

The boat felt very stable to me. I did not feel rocking even when we moved at speed. It is a small boat, so you are never far from the window or the railing, and you can walk between the indoor and outdoor areas to find a view you like.

The Views You Will See

Gwangan Bridge

The bridge is the star. At night its cables and towers change color, and from the water you see the whole length of it in one frame. I took a lot of photos here, and almost all of them came out well even on a phone.

Centum City, BEXCO and the Haeundae skyline

On the river you pass the tall towers of Centum City and the area around BEXCO. Because the water is so calm, the reflections look almost like a second city below. If you like photos, look for the moments when the boat slows down and turns.

Prices and Booking (Check the Official Site)

Fares depend on the time of day and change by season and promotion, so please treat the numbers below as a snapshot of what the official site listed when I wrote this. The price table shows a regular price next to a lower promotional price for public tours, so confirm the amount you will actually pay at checkout.

Public tour (adult, middle school and up)Listed price (KRW)Promo price shown (KRW)
Day38,00019,000
Sunset / peak74,00037,000
Night84,00042,000

Children (24 months to elementary school) pay less, and under 24 months is free with proof of age. In KRW terms, the promo night fare is roughly US$30 at current exchange rates (approximate, and rates change). The site also mentioned a special event fare for some late night departures in autumn, so look at the schedule for your date.

How to book:

  1. Open the official site, haeundaerivercruise.com, and open the reservation page.
  2. Choose the date, departure time and number of people by age.
  3. Pay online. The site says confirmation arrives within about 30 minutes; if it does not, call 051-711-1789.
  4. Arrive at the ticket office 30 minutes before departure and bring photo ID (a passport photo or copy works for foreigners; a mobile ID or a copy is also accepted, per the site).

Important rules from the site: it is a pre-booked system, so late arrival means no refund or change. Refunds are 100% five days before, 50% three days before, 30% one day before, and none on the day. If the weather agency issues a storm or typhoon-type warning, they reschedule for free, but ordinary rain does not cancel the trip (a free raincoat and indoor seating are provided). Outside food is not allowed on public tours, but water, drinks and snacks are provided on board.

How to Get There

  • Subway: Line 2, Centum City Station, Exit 12, then about a 5-minute walk.
  • Driving: There is no dedicated lot. The operator says the Busan Cinema Center parking lot offers 2 hours of free parking if you give your plate number at the ticket office; it is about a 7-minute walk.

My Tips

  • Dress warmly. The wind on the water is strong, especially on the open upper deck at night. Bring a windproof jacket and a scarf outside summer.
  • Motion sickness: The boat felt stable to me, but if you get seasick easily, you might find it a bit hard. Sit indoors on the first floor, look at the horizon, and take medicine beforehand if you need it. The day cruise is the calmest.
  • Book early for sunset and night slots, as they fill up first, especially on weekends.
  • Charge your phone and clean the lens; night photos look best when you hold steady and use your phone's night mode.
  • Be on time. There are no refunds for missing the boat.

Honestly, I could not think of a real downside. It is short, scenic and easy.

FAQ

How long is the Haeundae River Cruise?

About 50 minutes for all public tours, according to the official site. Arrive 30 minutes earlier for check-in.

Which is better, sunset or night?

Both are great. Sunset gives you changing colors and then lights as the sky darkens; night gives you the full glow of the skyline and the bridge. If you can only do one, I would choose the sunset slot that ends after dark, depending on season and departure times.

Can foreigners book it?

Yes. The operator now has an English website with courses and departure times. If you have trouble booking or paying, call 051-711-1789 or ask your hotel to help. Bring your passport or a photo of it for ID check.

If paying on the official site doesn't work for you, Klook also sells Haeundae River Cruise tickets in English. Its confirmation can take up to 24 hours and its cancellation rules are strict, so book a few days ahead and read the terms.

Will I get seasick?

The route is on a river and coastal waters, and the boat felt steady for me. Still, sensitive people may feel a little unwell, so choose an indoor seat or the day tour.

What should I wear?

Layers and a windbreaker. It is windy on the deck and colder than the city on land, especially after dark.

Is it worth it?

For a short, scenic activity in Busan, yes, especially at sunset or night.

Final Thoughts

If your Busan list is full of beaches and seafood, add this cruise as a calm evening highlight. Book a sunset or night departure, dress warmly, and enjoy Gwangan Bridge from the water. Prices and schedules change, so check the official site before you go.

Info based on the operator's official website at the time of writing. Please verify current fares, times and rules before booking.
